I received two letters today that completely touched my heart in a very big way.

The first letter came from an 8 year old little girl (Callie) from Lakewood Ranch, FL. Callie wrote to tell us how she and her friend (Courtney) had a lemonade stand and they raised money for Payton's foundation. The girls raised $75 by selling lemonade, cookies and donuts! We will use those funds for our gas card program. I already have a family that is in need. I continue to be amazed by children helping eachother...thinking of others...especially at such a young age. To the parents of Callie and Courtney, you are such role models for your children. To teach them about giving back to their community and to help others in need is priceless. Thank you so much Callie and Courtney for helping children who are fighting brain cancer. The family that will recieve the gas cards will be VERY appreciative and extremely thankful for your thoughtfulness and generousity.

The second letter came from Payton Wright from Oregon.  I did look twice when I first opened the letter. This young woman is a freshman in college.  Her advisor suggested she and her classmates google their name to see what a potential employer would see if they wanted to look them up.  She stated that when she put her name in nothing came up about her...but a lot about childhood cancer. She went on to say "I hope you both realize the impact you've had on the world, and the awareness your've provided about childhood cancer".  I opened this letter while I was sitting in my car in the parking lot at our office.  I couldn't believe I was reading this letter from a young woman in Oregon...that our Payton made an impact on her...I was speechless.

I won't lie...it is very difficult running a foundation.  There are times I don't know if I can continue...but then I receive both of these letters in one day.  A little girl and her friend who worked hard to earn $75 just to help families in need, and another young woman...in college...who was inspired enough to write a letter to us.  I am so grateful for these girls to keep me going and remind me to keep fighting.  Fight for children and never give up helping...that is what I will keep on doing.

Thank you ever so much Callie, Courtney, and Payton!

We receive many letters from families that The Payton Wright Foundation has helped.  Below is another amazing story about a beautiful little boy named Khalil.  Thank you DONORS FOR HELPING FAMILIES!!!!!

Khalil at duke
"Khalil has always been considered our miracle baby. Khalil was conceived less than two months after my husband was diagnosed and treated for testicular cancer. Our lives were forever blessed on January 25, 2012 at 1:06pm at Women’s Hospital here in Greensboro, NC. After 36 hours of labor, 9 months planning, nesting, and praying…he was finally here. No pushing needed for delivery; he crawled into the world!

While having the best 15 months of our lives being parents for the first time; we had no idea of the bad news waiting for us. Khalil was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, and a pilomyxoid astrocytoma. His spinal cord is coated with tumors and he would need surgery and chemotherapy to help him over his hurdles. Khalil only had one symptom which was his head was a little larger than normal during his 15 month checkup.

Watching Khalil go through numerous surgical procedures, scans, injections and chemotherapy without missing a step or losing his bright smile; we know we can stand strong and fight the battle beside our son. Khalil has made our entire family stronger because of his strength. Every day we feed off of the positive energy Khalil possesses. He’s the most amazing blessing we could ever imagine and we spend our days trying to make his days special like he does for us.

After a full year of chemotherapy it feels amazing to say that “Khalil is CANCER FREE”! The amazing teams of doctors at Duke University hospital were able to come up with a treatment plan that would save our son and restore of faith in numerous other ways. Currently Khalil has three therapists which are physical, occupational, and speech to help him with some delays. Most of his days are spent as a much energized 3 years old boy. We couldn’t ask for anything better!"

Selara Picture
Selara's mom (Cassie) wrote this touching letter to share the importance of helping families who are caring for children with brain cancer.  We also love the ending to this story...I think you will too!

"Your foundation helped our family tremendously and we could not be more grateful. I am attaching some photos of our daughter Selara. She is now 7 months cancer free and we are so blessed."

Our story:

"In April of 2014 our lives came to sudden and terrifying halt. We were given the news that our only child, our beautiful 12 year old, had a brain tumor. We had virtually no time to think or process anything. She was rushed to All Children's Hospital in St. Pete where she underwent a tumor resection, aphorisous catheter, port placement, and stem cell harvesting. She than went for 30 radiation treatments at Florida Hospital and than back to All Children's for 5 months of high dose chemo. Prior to her diagnoses I was a full time student in my second year of nursing school and working part time. My husband was working two jobs and we were doing our best to make ends meet. Needles2to say the financial burden placed on our family was extreme. I refused to leave Selara's side and because of that, I had to withdrawl from school and quit my job. That cut our monthly income by more than half. With the help we received from the foundation helped me to focus on Selara and help her through everything without stressing about if we would have lights or running water or even car insurance. The amount of stress was astronomical, but with your help it became a bit more manageable. Thank you and everyone that takes a part in helping families like mine. Cancer is a terrifying world and often times the road is dark and filled with pit holes, but than friend like you come along and help to navigate through the dark. Thank you for your hand and support.

Sincerely,

The Hightower Family

(Joseph [Daddy], Cassie [Mommy] and Selara [ 7 months cancer free and will be celebrating her 14th birthday on October 5th])"

Care packages are based on children’s’ age and gender and include everything from a snuggly blanket and stuffed animals to coloring books, crayons and DVD’s.

Thank you for Feeding the Frog, McNeal Elementary!
We are thrilled to announce that students and staff members at McNeal Elementary School in Lakewood Ranch, Florida raised more than $8,200.00 through the 2015 Hop to It… Feed the Frog fundraising campaign!  This is McNeal Elementary School’s second year participating in Hop to it… Feed the Frog, which is a simple and fun fundraising campaign that encourages children to collect spare change and return it to their classroom. The classes that collect the most money get pizza parties and The Payton Wright Foundation is able to provide even more financial assistance to families caring for children with brain cancer. If you know of a school or organization that might be interested is hosting their own Hop to it… Feed the Frog fundraising campaign, please contact Holly Wright at holly@paytonwright.orgor via phone 941-228-4886. We could use your help getting this campaign into more schools/organizations!

Don’t miss the next DOLLAR DAY!

The Payton Wright Foundation is encouraging supporters and friends to participate in our DOLLAR DAY campaign via the PWF website. Dine-and-Give-art

Established in 2008 by Patrick and Holly Wright, the foundation honors the memory of their daughter, Payton, who passed away from brain cancer at the age of five. The foundation works with families, physicians and social workers nationwide to provide practical relief for things such as fuel, food or housing expenses so that families can fully concentrate on their children’s care and treatment. “This will be a true gift from the community,” comments Holly Wright, “and we thank the restaurants – and their patrons – for contributing to such an important cause.”

IMG 8072 3Holiday Help

The holidays are here and for most of us it is a joyous time spent with family and friends. While this reminder isn’t intended to put a damper on your holiday cheer, please don’t forget about the many families nationwide who are struggling financially while caring for children battling brain cancer. Paying daily expenses is stressful enough on a limited income (it is typical for one parent to stop working in order to provide around the clock care for the child) but now there are Christmas and Hanukah gifts to buy. Doctor’s appointments and radiation treatments don’t stop for the holidays and The Payton Wright Foundation is seeing a significant increase in the number of requests for assistance. By providing gas cards, paying mortgage/rent, utilities, etc., The Payton Wright Foundation enables families to spend the little bit that they have left on gifts for their children. I have had a heavy heart the last few days...to the point of tears....of learning about several children fighting for their life.  As we enter this holiday season with our friends and family, please remember that there are many families whose children are in the hospital or on hospice care.  Thank you to all our donors and supporters who have helped us assist families in need.  I was so excited to receive a letter from a family we assisted this year.  It too brought tears to my eyes (happy tears)!  This is their little boy who is able to be home with his parents for Christmas.  Below is the letter we received from the Datu family...this letter is for all our supporters!

"Hi [The Payton Wright Foundation], we were the  Datu family from Ontario, Canada ( SickKids) whom you help from Phone bill and Apartment rent.  What encouragement to know that God's spirit is alive and working through people who choose to be used by Him.

We've so appreciated your support for us.

Happy Holidays from our Family to yours. Wishing you the best this holiday
season and a Happy New Year!!

Yours truly,
Datu Family

IMG 8072 3As the holiday season approaches, The Payton Wright Foundation would like to take this time to thank all of our donors, supporters and volunteers for their support and assistance spreading awareness and generating funds for pediatric brain cancer. I would like to share with you a letter that I wrote a few years ago.

Just Imagine for a moment you are living the American dream. You are providing for your family, working hard, enjoying your children and family WHEN you suddenly learn your child has a serious illness… such as brain cancer. Once you get past the initial shock of this devastating news you are hit once again with what insurance will and will NOT cover. Your attention is ONLY on how you are going to save your child’s life. Everyday living expenses are not of concern UNTIL you realize you must take time off of work or take a leave of absence from work to provide around the clock care for your child. The increased fear and anxiety of…

“Will I be able to keep my job?”

“How will I pay my rent/mortgage, utilities, phone bills?”

“How do I pay these medical bills that keep coming in faster and faster?”

“How do I ….”

Never in a million years did we imagine ourselves in this position. Our baby girl was fighting a deadly disease and we were struggling to keep a roof over our heads. Cancer does not care about race, religion or economic status …it just happens. We learned firsthand that insurance only pays a percentage and it is nowhere near enough. There are no subsidies for living expenses or for the accumulating medical bills that are not covered by insurance.

We were emotionally and financially drained. During our crisis, the community rallied around us and helped us financially. We feel it is our duty to pay it forward by helping families who are struggling RIGHT NOW.

The Payton Wright Foundation is passionate and committed to helping families nationwide who are caring for children with brain cancer. We strive to prevent day to day living expenses from further burdening families during this fight by providing financial assistance for monthly mortgage/rent payments, utility bills, phone bills, car payments and other short-term financial obligations.

With the help of our supporters and donors, we are making a difference when it matters the most. Your tax-deductible donation can be made online at www.paytonwright.org or via mail sent to the address below.

Eddie Livingston back thank you card Eddie Livingston thank you card

On Behalf of the Board of Trustees of The Payton Wright Foundation, we would like to thank Eddie Livingston's family and supporters for their generous donations to financially assist families caring for a child with cancer.  It meant a great deal to Eddie's parents and siblings to have so many help raise needed funds and awareness for pediatric cancer.  September 3rd is Eddie's birthday....What an amazing tribute to such a sweet little boy.

When you are told your child has cancer, the only thing that matters to a parent is saving their child's life.  Because of families like the Livingston's, The Payton Wright Foundation is able to continue to financially help families caring for a child with cancer, so they can concentrate on their child's needs.

Thank you again to the Livingston's and their supporters.  Our thoughts and prayers will continue for the entire Livingston family.
